The AirSelfie 2 Drone Wants to Be Your Personal Paparazzo

PC Magazine published an interesting article on the AirSelfie 2 drone. Selfie fiends take note: you can ditch the stick and still get a high-angle shot or video. You just have to spend a bit of money to do it.

The AirSelfie 2 is a flying pocket camera that captures 12MP stills and 1080p video footage. It sells for $199.95 on its own or for $249.95 with a carrying case that doubles as a battery pack, which is probably the way to go as you’ll only get five minutes of flight from the AirSelfie’s internal battery.

You may be tempted to call this a drone because it has propellers and a camera. It’s not. Drones by definition have some sort of autonomous flight capability, whether it be as basic as GPS-assisted return-to-home or as advanced as automated flight and obstacle avoidance. The AirSelfie 2 is a tech toy, the type that would be sold at Sharper Image if it had existed in the 1990s.

I saw the AirSelfie 2 in action at New York’s CE Week event at the Javits Center. Despite being in a convention center that is absolutely riddled with 2.4GHz Wi-Fi networks (the same type of network the quadcopter uses to connect to your Android or iOS smartphone), the aircraft connected easily, though it did wobble quite a bit in position and was a little slow to respond to flight commands. A representative from AirSelfie said that’s not normal for indoor flight, and we agreed that Wi-Fi interference was to blame.

She also stated that users should take care when flying outdoors. The AirSelfie’s motors are powerful enough to send it as high as 65 feet in the air, but not enough to fight strong winds. Continue reading about this second-gen selfie drone.
