Boeing to Acquire Aurora Flight Sciences

Early this month Boeing announced its plans to acquire Aurora Flight Sciences Corporation, a developer and producer of superior aerospace platforms. Aurora is a leader in the emerging field of electric propulsion for aircraft. Aurora has collaborated with Boeing multiple times over the last decade on the rapid prototyping of innovative aircraft and structural assemblies for both military and commercial applications. With this acquisition, Boeing is hoping to accelerate its development of game-changing autonomy technology for innovative aerospace vehicles.

“The combined strength and innovation of our teams will advance the development of autonomy for our commercial and military systems,” mentioned Greg Hyslop, chief know-how officer and senior vice chairman of Boeing Engineering, Test & Technology. “Together, these talented teams will open new markets with transformational technologies.”

The terms of the agreement were not disclosed. Once this transaction is finalized, Aurora will be considered a subsidiary under Boeing Engineering Test & Technology, and will change to Aurora Flight Sciences, A Boeing Company. The company will retain an independent operating model while benefiting from Boeing’s resources and position.

Why The Deal Is A Smart Move For Boeing

DroneLife.com put out an interesting article discussing the numerous reasons why this deal is smart for Boeing. Aurora has substantial contracts with the protection division and they amplify Boeing’s R&D in UAV, specifically within unmanned passenger transportation. Aurora was chosen by Uber this past April to be a companion in growing electrical vertical takeoff and touchdown (eVTOL) plane for the Uber Elevate Network.

“Uber is taking a big step forward toward making the world’s first VTOL network a reality and our partnership with Aurora Flight Sciences will help get us off the ground,” mentioned Mark Moore, Director of Engineering for Uber. “The Elevate VTOL network will help improve urban mobility around the world and transform the way we travel.”

Unmanned transportation is coming to each the auto and plane industries. With this acquisition Boeing is trying to preserve tempo with startups equivalent to Velocopter, which lately carried out a check flight in Dubai, and Passenger Drone in addition to massive aerospace corporations equivalent to Airbus which introduced the Airbus Popup idea earlier this year.
